OVER a thousand runners pounded the streets of Halesowen for charity this weekend in the biggest ever Black Country Road Run.

Runners were cheered on by well-wishers, shopkeepers and residents as the town became a paradise for runners on Sunday.

Race organiser Rotarian Alan Bowler branded the fourth fun run a success and is already looking forward to the fifth next year.

He said: "The atmosphere in Halesowen was wonderful with over 1,100 runners taking part and it really was a great day.

"We were really lucky with the weather and both races passed off smoothly because of all of the marshals we had on duty, we have had lots of compliments on the organisation.

"I'd like to thank everyone who volunteered on the day, Zion Christian Centre provided 60 marshals, the motorbike and 4x4 marshals were great too, they all ensured the runners and their families feel very safe."

He added: "This was our fourth fun run and each time the event has got bigger and better and we have already picked the date for next year - Sunday, July 3."

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris enjoyed running the circuit and praised the organisers.

He said: "It was fantastic to see more runners than ever before at yet another well organised Black Country Fun Run. I joined runners from all over the region in what is now a must not be missed annual event.

"Congratulations to the Halesowen Rotary who make this possible. "

The Mayor and Mayoress of Dudley and the council’s chief executive were among the runners.

Halesowen and Rowley Regis Rotary Club in conjunction with Halesowen Athletics Association, organised the event – as part of a packed programmed of activities throughout July to mark the Black Country Festival.

Mayor, Councillor Steve Waltho and Mayoress Jayne Waltho ran the 5k on behalf of their five chosen charities.

Sarah Norman, chief executive of Dudley Council, took part in the 10k run.

Fundraising legend Blind Dave Heeley was also among the runners, dressed as one of the three blind mice.

Councillor Steve Waltho, Mayor of Dudley, said: “It was great to see so many people out in Halesowen taking part in the Great Black Country Run.

"This is one of a number of events throughout this month as part of the Black Country Festival and shows that the festivities have really captured people’s imaginations.”
