THE son of Oldbury Councillor Mahboob Hussain who was arrested as part of the investigation into fraudulent sales of Sandwell Council properties will face no further action.

Azeem Hafeez was arrested on April 1 in Oldbury as part of the investigation which was launched last October but West Midlands Police this week confirmed he will not be charged.

A West Midlands Police spokeswoman said: "The 30-year-old man who was arrested in connection with an investigation into irregularities regarding the sale of former Sandwell Council properties between June 2012 and September 2014 has been released without charge and told no further action will be taken against him.

"He was arrested from an address in Oldbury on 1 April 2015."

He added: "He was on police bail throughout the intervening period."

The police confirmed the investigation, which is being run by the regional fraud squad and is one of the longest running of its type in the country, continues.

Last October Cllr Hussain stood down as chairman of the council's asset management and land disposal committee.

He said at the time: "I fully expect the audit service's investigation to clearly show I have followed all the proper rules and procedures."

Cllr Hussain also resigned from the cabinet and his position as deputy leader of the Sandwell Council along with former cabinet member for the economy Cllr Ian Jones.

Sandwell Council also instructed solicitors Wragge, Lawrence, Graham and Co to investigate and compile a report concerning the fraud allegations at the council, the report is yet to be published.
