IF becoming a volunteer is on the list of New Year’s resolutions, then look no further than joining the Dudley borough befriending scheme.

The aim of the initiative, which has been developed by Dudley Council’s housing support team, is to provide one-to-one and group assistance to housing tenants who are lonely, isolated or facing a difficult time.

Volunteers provide friendly, informal support by forming partnerships with the users and whenever possible, a befriender is matched with someone with the same interests.

Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member for housing, said: “The festive season is a time when many of us make a pledge to undertake a New Year’s resolution and often these relate to becoming more active in the local community.

“The befriending service offers individuals the opportunity to help housing tenants who need help, assistance and perhaps a friendly face.

“This is particularly important after the festive period as this is a time when many people living at home, or perhaps suffer an illness, feel isolated.

“Show how much you ‘love your community’ and volunteer now.”

Befrienders should be at least 18-years-old and checks will be conducted before recruitment, Full training will also be provided.
