POWERS to protect a Halesowen beauty spot from development by making it a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) rest with Dudley Council and not Natural England.

Contrary to details issued by the council, Natural England’s lead adviser said the decision would have to be made by the local authority.

Peter Loat was speaking following the launch of ornithologist John Ebrey’s campaign to make Coombeswood Green Wedge a LNR.

Mr Ebrey hopes to persuade a government-appointed inspector to recommend the council gives the land the designation at the public examination into the Dudley Development Strategy later this month.

Mr Loat said Natural England is a statutory consultee and provides advice to councils, but it is their decision whether a nature reserve is created.

He said: “Local authorities have the responsibility and decision to declare Local Nature Reserves. Natural England’s role is in a consultative and administrative capacity.”
