POLICE say they did respond to calls about travellers breaking into a Halesowen playing field, but admit they are powerless to act on their own.

Chief Inspector Simon Inglis, from Dudley Police, said officers went to the Birdy’s Playing Fields, off Nimmings Road, to investigate at 10.15pm last night after calls that travellers were breaking locks.

They spoke with the travellers and residents and had also been there today to deal with concerns and investigate the reports of damage.

Chief insp Inglis said: “However, it is important to note that as this is local authority land the lead organisation is Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council and we are working closely with them to manage this situation.

“As is always the case when travellers occupy public land, we are working hand in hand with Dudley Council to take the necessary appropriate action.

“It is important to note that section 61 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act powers, which allow police to move travellers on, can only be used when certain criteria is met.

“In the first instance the local authority must apply for a possession order and seek to evict those who are there unlawfully. If the situation becomes one where we have to intervene to remove those people, we will not hesitate to do so.”

He added: "My message to the local community is that we are there keeping a close eye on the situation and will continue to be so and support them until the caravans and vehicles have been moved.

“Any reports provided to us will be dealt with in a professional and proportionate manner. I understand the concern local residents and businesses have, but please be rest assured that the location will be returned to a position of normality over the coming days."

Halesowen North councillor Karen Shakespeare said it was vital the council had staff available at all times – including the weekend - to assist the police if required.
