IRRESPONSIBLE parking around a Halesowen school is an accident waiting to happen, claims a councillor.

Conservative Nick Gregory is calling for a clampdown on poor parking near Howley Grange Primary School.

He said parents are parking around junctions, causing blind spots for other motorists and on zig-zag lines outside the school.

Cllr Gregory said there had been no response to calls for action during this school year.

“The parking is terrible in Howley Grange Road and neighbouring streets. It is an accident waiting to happen,” he said.

Cllr Gregory is now urging the authorities to concentrate resources in the area at the start of the new term in September.

“This would be an ideal opportunity to educate parents of the new intake and to remind other parents about safe parking,” he said.

The Halesowen South councillor also appealed to parents to leave their vehicles at home and walk their children to and from school.

Cllr Hilary Bills, cabinet member for environmental services, said: “Like many boroughs up and down the country we have issues with inconsiderate parking around schools which we work hard to address through a combination of enforcement and education.

“The council’s civil enforcement staff will be inspecting the roads around Howley Grange Primary when the children return to school in September.

“Our road safety team will also be providing the school with road safety material to be shared with the parents of new pupils.

“I am more than happy to meet with those residents affected to try and find a workable solution to this issue.”
