A 19-year-old Halesowen man met the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh after winning two royal awards for his committment to scouting.

Adam Sankey, who has been a member of 1st Halesowen Scouts since he was just six years old, when he joined the group's beaver colony, has received his gold Duke of Edinburgh Award and his Queen's Scout Award.

He had to take part in numerous activities over the last four years to win the prestigious accolades, including taking part in a conservation project in Epping Forest, completing swimming lifesaving awards, camping in Switzerland, ballroom dancing and a week's hiking expedition in the Lake District.

Adam, who is studying for an HND in film studies at Worcester University, progressed through the cubs and scouts and is now a leader with the group.

He received his Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award certificate at St James' Palace where he met HRH Duke of Edinburgh and was awarded his Queen's Scout Award at Windsor Castle in front of Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

The former Windsor High pupil said: "I feel really proud to get the two awards.

"When we went to Windsor for the parade people were cheering you on.

"It was really good - we met the Duke and Queen.

"I've been working towards the Queen's Award for three or four years now so it's a load off my back but I'm glad I've done it."

Adam, of Hilstone Avenue, is looking forward to joining scouts from around the world when he heads to Brownsea Island in July for the scouting movement's 100th anniversary celebrations.

His younger brother Nicholas and three other explorer scouts from Halesowen 1st Scouts Group will be joining 40,000 scouts at the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Essex.
