HALESOWEN's Mayhem Theatre group are celebrating after sweeping the board at the Worcester Theatre Festival.

Mayhem won six awards at the festival in Droitwich's Norbury Theatre over the weekend as 12 groups battled it out for honours.

Supernatural thriller The Monkey's Paw won best play, best set, best director for Linda Evans and was crowned the overall winner of the festival.

However, the group cannot progress to the next stage of the All England Theatre Festival due prior commitments of the cast.

Drama The Librarian won best original piece for Mayhem founder Stephen Moran and best actress went to Ruth Cattell from Stourbridge.

Mr Moran said: "This is a remarkable achievement because we are such a tiny group.

"This is akin to Leicester City FC winning the Premiership, everyone performed brilliantly and to win six awards, only just missing out on the seventh one that we qualified for is amazing."

Mayhem Theatre are hoping to stage both award-winning plays in Halesowen in April.

He added: "We are hoping to turn the Somers Sports and Social upstairs room into a little theatre for a night in April, it would be great if people get to see the plays in Halesowen.

"A lot of people did make the journey to Droitwich which was great to see, it gave us a lot of encouragement to have so much support in the crowd."
