HALESOWEN Town Football Club held an emotional minute’s silence before Tuesday night’s game in honour of former club doctor Herbert Jones.

Known throughout the club and in the community as “Doc Jones” the GP was a popular figure who continued to support The Yeltz throughout the country after he retired.

A spokesman for Halesowen Town Football Club said: “We are deeply saddened to announce that former club doctor Doc Jones has passed away.

The club arranged a minute’s silence before kick off at Tuesday’s home game against Marine.

“Everyone associated with the club passes on their thoughts and condolences to his family.”

Members of Dr Jones family attended the game against Marine FC to witness the silent tribute to him.

Former Yeltz physiotherapist Gavin Blackwell, who worked alongside Dr Jones at the club, praised the departed doctor.

He said: “He was a great source of knowledge and expertise and nothing was ever too much trouble.

“He was caring and would always be on hand to assist players, managers and staff throughout my time at the club as physiotherapist and he was a fantastic source of information.

“Many times I called upon him out of hours to have a look at a player or ask his advice.”

He added: “The Doc, as he was affectionately known, would always be on hand, be it for stitches to a cut, a prescription for some minor illness or condition that needed sorting or just to offer his sound medical knowledge.

“He also provided vital first aid to us all on our coach journeys following away games.”

He added: “He was a great friend and colleague who cared for his players, his patients and his football club.

“The Doc will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to be associated with him.”
