SAFETY chiefs in Sandwell are urging residents to report all hate crimes so victims can receive the support they need.

The ‘Sandwell Together Against Hate’ campaign promotes different ways people can report incidents, which can take place anywhere and to anyone, whether they are face-to-face, on the phone, online or a verbal or physical confrontation.

Incidents of hate crime – motivated by prejudice, where someone is targeted because of personal characteristics such as disability, gender identity, race, religion/faith or sexual orientation – can be reported by phone, online, or at many centres in the community that have been trained to deal with reports.

Councillor Elaine Costigan, Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for public health and protection, said: “Hate has no place in Sandwell and we want everyone to know how to recognise incidents and how to report them.

“As well as contacting the police or council, people can now report hate crimes and seek advice at many places in the community.

“This shows the commitment of organisations and community groups across Sandwell to stand together against hate and support victims who need our help.”

Organisations in Sandwell are said to be taking a 'zero tolerance' approach to hate crime and working closely together to support victims.

Chief Superintendent Richard Baker, Sandwell Police commander, said: “We ask everyone to report all hate incidents so we can take firm action against perpetrators and ensure people get the support they need.”

Sandwell’s deputy council leader, Councillor Syeda Khatun, added: “As we were reminded at this month’s Great Get Together events to celebrate the life of Jo Cox MP, ‘we have far more in common with each other than things that divide us’.

“I want to thank everyone who is taking part in the Sandwell Together Against Hate Campaign and urge people not to suffer in silence.”

Report hate crime by calling police on 101, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or Sandwell Council on 0121 368 1166.
