AN appeal has been made for new male singers to join a well-established Halesowen choir.

The 60-strong Lutley Community Voices currently comprises around 30 altos, 20 sopranos but just a dozen men, so the group are on the hunt for male talent to join their ranks.

Choir chairman John Rhead said: “We need more male voices. You don't need to be able to read music, and we don't do auditions. You just need enthusiasm and want to sing.

“Men’s first reaction is to say ‘I can't sing’, but enthusiasm and willingness to give it their all is a great way to have fun in a choir of 60 or more people.”

Musical director Margaret Jones added: “It’s sometimes better to sing the wrong note with conviction and pizazz, than the right note without enthusiasm!”

The choir – which sing a mix of folk, classical, pop, musicals, rock and gospel – will be performing autumn and pre-Christmas concerts in churches, sports and social clubs, care and special-needs homes and other local venues, all aimed at helping, entertaining and bringing people together.

In the past 12 months the choir has taken part in a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ at Carters Lane Church, a joint appearance with Langley Brass Band at Earls High School, a triumphant ‘Community Spirit’ event at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall – where Lutley's 60 voices joined with 300 others in vocal harmony – and a season-closing concert at St John’s Church.

Anyone who would like to sing with the group - especially men – are welcome to attend the choir’s weekly rehearsals at Lutley Primary School on Thursday evenings during term time, from 7.45 pm to 9.15pm.
