HALESOWEN College has secured a £95,000 Sport England grant to help get more young people active.

The college has three ambitious plans to use the money in its bid to get young people to try out new activities and explore different ways of keeping them moving.

There are plans for three outdoor covered table tennis tables and a new active coordinator who will schedule a range of sport, social and fitness activities throughout the year.

During the summer term, part of the college will be transformed into a temporary beach for beach volleyball and tug of war games and activities.

The new programme will build on the work the college has already done to launch an outdoor gym and a mental health trim trail to help staff and students take time out and improve their fitness.

Halesowen College’s Elaine Cammies said: “This money will really help us to enhance what we already have to help young people improve their fitness as well as their mental health.

“It is really important to encourage young people to improve their fitness levels and this grant shows the innovative and different ways to do this.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this National Lottery funding which we will definitely put to good use to help our students and staff.”

Mike Diaper, from Sport England, added: “We are delighted to offer Halesowen College National Lottery funding to help students get active.”
