LIFESAVING recycling bin collectors who came to the rescue of a Rowley Regis resident who had suffered a stroke have been shortlisted for a national award.

Driver Jason Tustin and loaders Mohammed Arsib, Michael Fox and Javed Iqbal collect blue lid recycling bins and food waste bins across the borough.

The heroic team – who also once tipped off the police when they discovered empty machete boxes in a recycling bin – have got to know many residents on their rounds and keep an eye out for vulnerable people.

But last December, they came to the aid of a man who had collapsed in his Rowley Regis home and called the emergency services.

They supported the police and ambulance in getting to him and the man’s family credited them with saving his life – he had suffered a major stroke.

The man’s since recovered and the crew continue to keep an eye out for him.

The crew, who work for Sandwell Council’s waste partner Serco, have now been shortlisted for a National Recycling Award in the ‘Team of the Year – Commercial’ category.

The team were nominated by their bosses because of their commitment to their job – as well as a series of achievements and good deeds they have done in the community.

The team’s managers regularly receive compliments about Jason, Mohammed, Michael and Javed – praising them for being friendly, helpful and committed to helping Sandwell recycle.

John Mason, contract general manager at Serco, said: “We are incredibly proud that the team has been recognised on a national level for the great job they do, day in day out.

“They are a true asset to Serco and the waste partnership.”

The winners of the National Recycling Awards will be announced on June 28.
