Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP Sylvia Heal has backed the summer Drink and Drug Driving Campaign run by West Midlands Police to target dangerous drivers.

The annual campaign targets people who think that drinking or taking drugs and then getting behind the wheel of a car is acceptable.

The aim is to drive down casualties on the roads and bring offenders to justice.

Nationally 850 people were killed or injured on the roads at the hands of drink and drug drivers last year.

West Midlands Police will stop more than 3,000 drivers and are warning those caught drink or drug driving face the minimum of losing their licence and a hefty fine.

Sylvia said: "Passengers can help by refusing to get in the car with someone they know has been drinking and people should remember if they have been out the night before they could still be over the limit the following morning.

"Hopefully this high-profile campaign will help get the message out that drink driving is not acceptable and help reduce the number of deaths on our roads."
