Old Halesonians Rugby Club is gearing up to stage a world record attempt as a tribute to a player's mother who is bravely battling leukaemia.

Players will set the world record for the amount of conversions scored in an hour at their Wassell Grove home as part of a 24-hour kickathon on Friday September 14 and Saturday September 15.

Half the money raised will go to Leukaemia Research in honour of Sue Garratt, aged 46, of Cradley Heath, (pictured above right) who was diagnosed with leukaemia in April.

Sue's 13-year-old son Rob plays for the Hagley club's under 14s squad.

The world record attempt will be at 1pm on the Saturday and will see 15 players using three balls score as many conversions in an hour - it will be logged as an official Guiness World Record - as yet there is no record.

The rest of the cash will go to the club's project to convert its changing rooms and install gym equipment. The club is appealing for sponsors.

Club spokeswoman Kath Spychal said: "We are all very hopeful, Sue's feeling pretty rough at the moment.

"She's been quite seriously ill but hopefully by Christmas she will be absolutely fine.

"She's been really brave.

"We really need sponsors to come forward and support the event."

Sue, a lunchtime supervisor at Timbertree Primary in Cradley Heath, is undergoing a final bout of treatment at Sandwell General Hospital this week.

She is married to David - the couple are parents to Rob and Amy, aged 20.

Sue said: "I feel very privileged and hope to be there on the day.

"The club has been a great support - they have been good friends."

The kickathon will start at 7.50pm on Friday September 14 with players camping overnight and kicking through the night till 7.50pm the next day.

There will be a fun day kicking off on the Saturday at noon with attractions including a bouncy castle, inflatable slide, face painting and fair rides.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the event can call Dee on 0782 8273345 e mail dee.greenwood@gmail.com or write to the club at Wassell Grove, Hagley, near Stourbridge, DY9 9JP.
