A major police operation tackling the theft of metal in Halesowen has got off to a strong start with several arrests made.

Operation Steel was launched at the start of August after an increase in the crime in recent months due to the higher value placed on scrap metal.

On Saturday officers arrested a 35-year-old man at a commercial premises on Long Lane after reports of lead being stolen from the roof. The man has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Meanwhile police have also located the owners of floral patterned lead which was stolen from a home in the town on August 4.

Officers also targeted scrap dealers and known metal theft hotspots on Wednesday, using overt tactics at various locations to crack down on offenders and those accepting stolen goods.

Superintendent Laurie Dyer, force leader for Operation Steel, said: "Since the launch of the operation, officers have been working together to try and combat the issue.

"We have enjoyed good successes and hope to see further arrests as the month progresses.

"Metal theft can affect all members of a community, from large businesses to homeowners."

From the period of April to June 2007, 761 metal thefts were recorded on the western side of West Midlands Police force, an increase of 112 per cent on last year.

Other areas targeted in Operation Steel include Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell.
