AN ICONIC prop from war film Saving Private Ryan is set to go under the hammer at an auction in Stourbridge.

The white marble cross seen at the beginning and end of Steven Spielberg’s 1998 film – deemed by many to be the most iconic war film prop of the 20th century – is estimated to be worth between £7,000 and £9,000.

The cross, as well as a range of props from the Brad Pitt film Fury, are all part of Fieldings Auctioneers’ annual Mantiques sale which takes place on Saturday, June 30.

It also contains substantial collections of police memorabilia, including British and American badges, helmets, hats and ephemera, and a large collection of American license number plates from the early part of the 20th century to the late 1990s.

A collection of football memorabilia from the late Black Country born referee Ken Burns, who served for 17 years at the football league and nine years at International level, with his most famous game officiated at the 1973 FA Cup Final between Leeds and Sunderland and also in various European Cup quarter finals, has also been entered into the auction.

A good collection of Roman gold coins entered from a private collection form a strong section of coins this year, with large numbers of later milled gold and silver proof sets offered as well in this ever popular section.

There is also a large collection of military items with over 150 lots of swords, rifles, pistols and medals, making it one of the strongest sections that Fieldings have offered in recent years.

While those who wish to drive away from the sale in something different, there is also a chance to climb up on a fully restored and working 1951 Ferguson TEA20 tractor.

Viewing gets underway at the auctioneers’ Mill Race Lane home from 8am before the start of sale at 10am.
