GREEN open space in Rowley Regis is set for the axe after Sandwell Council submitted a planning application to build a new cemetery.

The land in Powke Lane, located behind the houses which face the current Rowley Regis Crematorium, is currently public space and open to anyone.

Council chiefs have confirmed they are looking to use part of the land to ensure there will be “sufficient new burial space” for many years to come.

But concerns have been raised by residents who live by the site, claiming the authority have been “sneaky” with the publication of the plans, and that only a small minority of people have been made aware of the development.

Councillor Syeda Khatun, deputy leader, said the remainder of the land which is not used will still be able to be accessed freely by the public.

She said: “There are proposals to develop part of what is currently known as Powke Lane Open Space for the purpose of a new cemetery and we have contacted residents whose properties are adjacent to the site in question to get some feedback on our proposals.

“This site is currently used for local amenity purposes. It is proposed to initially develop only part of the site, which will afford residents ongoing access to the remainder of the site.

“Subject to the necessary approvals the new cemetery will ensure that there will be sufficient new burial space and memorial options in the town of Rowley Regis for many years.

“A draft plan of the design proposals and location will be on display in the information board and in the reception area at Rowley Regis Crematorium for Sandwell residents to view.”
