A WOMAN had to be taken to hospital after a severe fire engulfed the upstairs of an Old Hill pub just minutes before England’s World Cup semi-final.

Emergency services swarmed to the Spring Meadow pub in Halesowen Road following a 999 call just before 7pm yesterday evening (Wednesday, July 11).

West Midlands Fire Service sent two crews of 10 firefighters from Haden Cross and Oldbury stations to the scene, where a cat also had to be rescued.

A fire service spokesman said: “We received a 999 call at 6.52pm. The incident involved a severe fire in a first storey bedroom of a two storey public house.

“We had four firefighters enter the property wearing breathing apparatus, using a hose reel jet and a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke.

“One cat also had to be rescued from the property.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched an ambulance and a paramedic officer to the pub following a call from the fire service and treated three people for smoke inhalation.

Despite being treated by fire and ambulance personnel, a man in his 30s and a woman did not wish to be taken to hospital and were discharged at the scene.

A woman in her 30s, however, was taken by paramedics to Russells Hall Hospital for precautionary check-ups after suffering from smoke inhalation.

Fire crews remained on the scene until about 8.30pm to dampen down the property and to make sure there were no flare ups.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, although it is not deemed to be suspicious.
