UNITY prevailed at a Halesowen mosque’s ‘Peace Symposium’ which brought together people from a range of backgrounds.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community’s annual event at the Baitul Ghafoor Mosque, in Long Lane, heard speakers unite to reject the view that religion in its pure form causes divisions in society – rather that it is formed by those who abuse the name of religion.

Deputy Lord Lieutenant Dr Beverly Lindsay, Sandwell’s deputy mayor Councillor Carol Goult, Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris, and Sir Iftikhar Ayaz were among the 250 faith leaders, politicians, academics, local charity workers, diplomats and people from all walks of life, who attended the coveted event in its eighth year.

Wasim Shah, of the Ahmadiyya community, said: “All the speakers were impressed by the unity of the attendees in rejecting that religion, as practised by the Ahmadiyya community can be a cause for division in the society.

“Instead, since its inception in the area, the community has worked tirelessly and successfully to unite people of all backgrounds and denominations.”

Mr Morris added: “It has been a very enjoyable occasion. Hopefully, we can take some practical work from today’s discussion.”

During the event, Halesowen and Rowley Regis Rotary Club, Cancer Research UK and the Mayor of Sandwell charities received money donated by the local members of Ahmadiyya Community.
