A NEW leader has been appointed to the group which works to stop vulnerable Sandwell adults being abused.

Sue Redmond has taken on the role of the independent chairman of Sandwell Safeguarding Adults Board (SSAB) – a high-profile position which involves driving forward the board's critical work to ensure the residents of the borough are safe.

Made up of members from both the statutory sector and partner agencies, SSAB ensures reports of abuse are responded to professionally and efficiently, while championing the empowerment of adults with care and support needs.

Sue said: "It's an exciting time for Sandwell Safeguarding Adults Board. SSAB is currently developing a work programme that builds on the great work identified by the recent peer review, which will further improve the quality of services and the voice of the customer.

"I'm eager to get involved, get started and make a difference."

Councillor Ann Shackleton, cabinet member for social care, said: "The appointment of SSAB's new chair is excellent news.

"Sandwell Council's safeguarding work to protect vulnerable adults was praised in a report earlier this year, following a 'peer challenge' review headed up by the West Midlands Directors of Adult Social Services.

"Many positive areas of good practice were highlighted during the review – particularly the effective leadership and focus of the Safeguarding Adults Board.

"Sue takes on the role of SSAB's chair at a time when it is in a strong position to build on these achievements and strengths to continue to safeguard those in need."
