A HUGE fire has broken out at a recycling centre in Oldbury.

A huge blaze engulfing hundreds of tonnes of waste has ripped through a recycling plant.

The fire started at around 9.35pm last night (Monday January 3) at the recycling centre in Trinity Street.

Around 200 tonnes of waste went up in flames with firefighters from six stations at the scene throughout the night.

Firefighters were still at the scene today.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: "One crew from @WMFSOldbury remains at the scene of this overnight incident in Trinity Street.

"We responded at 9.35pm and arrived in 3 minutes.

"This was a slow-burning fire in an open-fronted, steel-framed unit.

"On-site staff used machinery to help break up and move the material."

Oldbury Fire station tweeted: "Through the night firefighters from Oldbury and surrounding stations have been dealing with a fire in a local recycling centre approximately 200 tonnes of material affected."

A fire service spokesman said: "Six fire engines, a brigade response vehicle and around 35 firefighters in total have been at the scene throughout the night.

"Personnel involved were from fire stations including Oldbury, Haden Cross, Handsworth, Smethwick, Tipton and West Bromwich.

"This was a slow-burning fire in what’s estimated to have been a 200-tonne mound of waste, within an open-fronted, steel-framed unit measuring approximately 100 metres by 40 metres."

Machinery has been used to tackle the blaze, along with hose reel jets.

The fire service added: "Our crews used main jets and hose reel jets to damp down the material, as on-site staff used machinery to help break up and move it.

"By 2.45am, around three quarters had been moved into an open yard where damping down continued."

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
