Plans for a state-of-the-art health and leisure complex in Oldbury have moved a step closer.

A £13million package to help regenerate Oldbury Leisure Centre, on Newbury Lane, was approved by Sandwell Council cabinet on January 16.

When complete the venue will incorporate the borough's only hydrotherapy pool, a doctors surgery, pharmacy, two sports halls, dance studio and cafe.

Speaking at the meeting council leader Bill Thomas revealed the complex funding negotiations which had taken place over a project which will see Sandwell Leisure Trust, Sandwell Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Sandwell Council's Adult Services and Health department working together.

Cllr Thomas said: "When we first announced this scheme there was a lot of concern it would never happen.

"It has taken time to get there because of the complex funding package.

"When finished it will be a benefit to everyone in the community."

Speaking after the meeting Rowley councillor Iris Boucher, who was cabinet member for adult services and health when the project first began, said she was delighted with the news.

Cllr Boucher said: "When we first discussed the scheme it seemed like a pipe dream but now it is a reality.
