Campaigners are fighting plans for a "preposterous" entrance to a new £43million super school in Rowley Regis which will run straight through their village green.

There will be a public consultation into proposals for St Michael's Secondary School, Westminster Special School and Whiteheath referral unit to move to new buildings on the former Rowley Regis College site, next Wednesday (April 9).

People living nearby do not want to lose the green off Hawes Lane opposite St Giles' Church which is used by children and dog walkers. They say an entrance there on the brow of a hill at an already busy junction will be treacherous and appealed for people to attend the meeting to protest.

Andrew Roe, of Siviters Lane, said the existing entrance to the college, also off Hawes Lane, should stay as it had never caused a problem.

He said: "The proposed junction with traffic lights will be chaos with traffic especially in the middle of winter when it's icy.

"There will be tailbacks in surrounding roads and parking problems."

Resident Sue Hadley said: "It's preposterous - it's on top of a hill - it's a busy junction. It will be an accident waiting to happen."

Sue is putting together a case to try to save the green and appealed for anyone who has used it to call her on 07712 921247.

Residents also said Sandwell Council had not properly advertised the public consultation which will be at St Michael's C of E High School in Throne Road, Rowley Regis, at 6pm and also criticised the early start.

Sandwell Council leader Bill Thomas said: "The existing entrance is even more dangerous - it's on a very nasty bend. We really have to look at an alternative but it would have to be subject to wide consultation and the highways would have to do traffic impact and analysis on it.

"It's very early days - the school isn't due for completion till 2011 - we have to do wide consultation and this is the appropriate time for people to voice concerns."

Councillor Ian Jones, Sandwell Council's cabinet member for children and young people, said the council would put on another session for people who could not make 6pm - which will start at 7pm. He said the meeting has been advertised for the last two months.

When completed there will be 2,000 pupils aged five to 18, and staff on site.
