The family of Paul McCann met and chatted to Prince William as he opened a memorial to fallen servicemen.
The names of Paul McCann and Anthony Huntrod were the last to be added to the wall of remembrance which lists 5,300 submariners who have died since 1904.
The memorial was opened by the prince at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire, last week.
Paul's dad Brian said Prince William personally requested the two families be present.
Brian said: "He was absolutely superb - we were allocated five minutes but he spent 15 minutes with us. He was so easy to talk to."
Brian said the family were amazed when William got down on his knees to chat to Paul's neice Lottie, aged nine, and posed for pictures with Lottie and her sister Indea, aged 14 who were delighted.
