A courageous teenager who battled his way to recovery after a devastating motorcross accident has won a prestigious school award.

Former British youth motorcross champion Ashley Hand, aged 15, was awarded The Stourport High School and VIth Form College's Student of the Year award for his "determination" and "resilience".

The teenager sustained life-changing head injuries in an accident at the sport's Bromyard track last September.

The experienced rider, who started in the sport aged just three, has no memory of the crash or the weeks leading up to it.

Despite being airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital and having to recover from a coma, Ashley was back at school just a month later.

Head of Year 10 Scott Rayson said: "He has shown more determination and resilience than most. He has remained the king, positive and friendly student he has been.

"He exemplifies our culture and embodies our values of kindness, determination and respect. I am so proud to have supported him as he has been a beacon of inspiration to everyone.

"He has got back on his feet like a whirlwind and consistently will not be beaten by anything daily."

Ashley was one of 77 students to receive awards at the school's Key Stage 4 Celebration Evening for Years 10 and 11.

Teachers and parents applauded students as they were presented with certificates for endeavour and achievement across all subjects and faculties.

Students receiving special awards also included Grace Benfield and Kyle Whetton for Head of Year 10 and 11 respectively and Roman Harvey who won the Reg Knott Award for performing arts.

Principal Sara Peace said: "It is fantastic to be able to reward so many for their hard work and success. I am so proud of all our students."
