Green-fingered youngsters at Howley Grange Primary School enjoyed designing flower beds to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.

Local wholesalers Solus Garden & Leisure Ltd supplied soil, compost and gardening equipment for the project, which the youngsters had been planning since May.

The completion of the flower beds, near the entrance to the school, was timed to coincide with the school’s summer fete and anniversary celebrations on June 14.

They feature begonia, labilia, marigold and bizzie lizzie plants spelling out the words ‘50 Years’, surrounded by pebbles on which the children have painted the numbers one to fifty.

Teacher Janet Harris, who helped to organise the project, said: “The children really enjoyed designing and planting the flower beds, and it’s been a great talking point for parents too.”
