A landmark Quinton cinema is set to make its big screen debut disguised as “the best disco in the world.”

The Reel Cinema on Hagley Road West will feature as the Wigan Casino in independent film Souled Out - which portrays the Northern Soul music scene of the 1970s.

One of the oldest cinemas in the country, it has been chosen because of its similarities to the legendary venue, which closed in 1981 and subsequently burnt down.

Residents are also being offered the chance to appear as extras in the film, which is being produced by independent company Ipso Facto films.

Sandra Millward, manager at The Reel, said everyone at the cinema was excited ahead of filming.

Sandra said: “I got a call from one of the producers who told me he had seen a picture of the cinema on the internet and it was perfect for the role - I thought he was joking at first.

”It’s absolutely brilliant news - it will make a change for the cinema to appear on screen rather than running it.”

Set in Stoke in 1974 the film tells the story of 17-year-old Joe McCain whose tedious life is transformed when he discovers the sound of Northern Soul at the Wigan Casino.

Filming is expected to take place from 9pm on Friday September 12 to 5am on Saturday September 13 and from 9pm on Saturday 13 until 5am on Sunday 14. Halesowen Road will be closed during those times.
