Hundreds of visitors to Sandwell College’s recent Open Evening found plenty to celebrate.

The Smethwick Campus was celebrating 100 years since the laying of its foundation stone in 1908 and the College held an evening of spooky fun for the local community.

Over a hundred people braved the perils of a ghost walk through darkened corridors of the 50s block where staff in fancy dress lay in wait.

Students from the Hair, Beauty and Performing Arts departments gave demonstrations and performances for visitors and the college’s first aid lecturers ran a gruesome first aid stand.

Principal Val Bailey said: “The fantastic turnout tonight by local residents is really pleasing and confirms that the College remains at the heart of the community.”

The Open Evening also attracted prospective students, both young and old. College staff were on hand to provide information on a wide variety of vocational programmes such as BTECs, NVQs and Apprenticeships as well as a series of fast-track programmes starting in November and January for anyone who thinks that they made the wrong choice when leaving school in the Summer.

Vice-Principal Scott Upton said: “Education moves with the times, and the next phase of the development of Sandwell College is the opening in 2011 of a new £85 million campus in West Bromwich.

The seven storey state-of-the-art building will ensure that Sandwell residents continue to benefit from the tradition of excellent local education.”
