Blind Dave to do honours

Inspirational blind marathon runner Dave Heeley will switch on Blackheath's Christmas lights later this month, it has been announced.

Dave, accompanied by his trusted guide dog Wicksie, will do the honours at a ceremony in the town on Saturday November 19.

Dave earned his place in history earlier this year by completing seven marathons on seven continents in seven days.

The married father of three became the first blind man to finish the mammoth feat of endurance which only adventurers Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Mike Stroud have ever accomplished.

Blackheath councillor Mary Docker, who is organising the lights switch on event this year, said: "We are delighted Dave is doing the honours and switching on the Christmas lights.

"He's an inspiration to a lot of people.

"As a borough man we are so proud of him."

Mary said she was glad that she was able to organise the event this year. Sandwell Council organised it last year and Mary said the event didn't attract as many people as it usually does.

An afternoon of entertainment is planned from noon including The Rowley Wind Band, Silkie The Clown and Tividale Tigers Marching Band. Father Christmas will make an appearance on his sleigh at 4pm. The actual switch on will take place at 5pm.
