Hundreds of people braved the cold to watch local hero blind Dave Heeley switch on the Christmas lights at Blackheath.
The inspirational blind marathon runner did the honours and flicked the switch at a ceremony in the town centre on Saturday (November 29).
Whilst there father of three Dave, who earned his place in history earlier this year by becoming the third person ever to have completed seven marathons on seven continents in seven days, met blind Rowley Regis youngster Mia Jade Rhoden.
Event organiser Blackheath councillor Mary Docker said Mia, who is two years old and suffers from a disorder which means her brain doesn't co-ordinate vision, had wanted to meet Dave because he is her hero.
Mary said: "Mia said 'hello Dave' and they chatted for about ten minutes.
"He held her in his arms - it was very emotional - there were a lot of tears in the crowd."
An afternoon of entertainment was held including The Rowley Wind Band, Silkie The Clown and Tividale Tigers Marching Band. Father Christmas will made an appearance on his sleigh at 4pm.
Mary said: "The turnout was disappointing in the afternoon because it was so bitterly cold.
"There was a good crowd for the switch on and people said the fireworks display was superb.
"I'd like to thank the marshalls who were standing in the freezing cold all afternoon to relieve congestion.
"We used to have around 5,000 people at the switch on events so it was a bit disappointing for us - but its Christmas and that's what its all about."
