THE golden oldies hogged the limelight as Almondsbury Town grabbed two away wins in the FTL Futbol Hellenic League Premier Division.

On Saturday, manager Paul Weeks (above) was the star in Town’s 2-0 victory at Flackwell Heath, after he was forced to come out of retirement to play in goal with Ben John suspended and Matt Hamilton stranded on the M32 after his van broke down.

Weeks, 37, was playing in his first game in six seasons.

“I cannot play regularly on medical advice but I thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Weeks added: “I didn’t have that much to do but it was a one-off.”

At Flackwell, Almondsbury took a 20th-minute lead when Lee Bridson crossed to the back post where Paul McKilvaney was lurking to force the ball in from a narrow angle.

They made it 2-0 just before the break when a Danny Haines free-kick was flicked on by Milsom for midfielder Marcus Mapstone to score.

Dan Holdcroft stepped in to Weeks’ shoes on Tuesday, as Almondsbury won 3-0 at Abingdon United.

Milsom, 36, scored two spectacular goals before super sub Steve Peters, 30, cooly lobbed the keeper from 30 yards.

“Paul is getting fitter now and he scored two great goals from the edge of the box and Steve Peters lobbed the keeper brilliantly,” said Weeks.

“They were three of the best goals you will see anywhere.”

Holdcroft will play again tonight when Almondsbury host Carterton and Chris Anstey will play in goal on Saturday in the home game with Old Woodstock Town.

“We now have players here who want to play for the club,” said Weeks. “We have nine games left and second place is up for grabs.”
