IT’S Saturday night and we’re watching the new series of Robin Hood in our very own ‘castle’ in the Derbyshire Dales.

One of 10 Manor Court Cottages in the village of Over Haddon, Baron’s Keep used to be a dairy. It sits next door to Unicorn Cottage, which is currently up for grabs in a prize draw.

With its simple exterior, Baron’s Keep gives no indication of the space and luxury within its thick stone walls.

The lounge has a large stone fireplace, exposed rooms and trusses, complemented by wooden furniture, leather sofas and deep red furnishings.

There’s a fully fitted kitchen with fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine, which comes in handy after those invigorating country walks.

The master bedroom has an ensuite shower room and dressing room while two twin-bedded rooms are in the eaves with low sloping ceilings and beams. Completing the layout is the main bathroom with corner bath.

All pet friendly, the cottages and barns sit beside the medieval grade two listed manor house, which dates back to 1553. The cottage buildings date back to the 19th century when the farm belonged to prime ministers Lord Melbourne – who gave invaluable advice to Queen Victoria – and Lord Palmerston.

Martin Pearce and Marie Mallon, the cottages’ owners, live on site and are always on hand to tackle any queries and concerns.

Children’s toys are scattered around the pretty courtyard, which Marie informs me is a real sun trap in summer. Smart metal tables give temporary residents the chance to eat outside.

Over Haddon is a short drive from the popular town of Bakewell, which has plenty of shops for stocking up on groceries or, if you want to eat out, a wide range of pubs, cafes and restaurants. The famous Bakewell Pudding (don’t call it a tart!) continues to go down well with sweet-toothed visitors.

The village itself is home to the CAMRA award-winning Lathkill Hotel, which has stunning views across the county. Other nearby attractions are Haddon Hall, Chatsworth and the Heights of Abraham at Matlock Bath.
