A STOURBRIDGE zoo keeper is well on his way to becoming fully trained after successfully completing the first phase of his studies in caring for zoo animals.

Robert Kedian, aged 23, alongside fellow zoo keeper Darren Saddler, also 23, are both in the first year of a two-year course, studying for an Advanced National Certificate in Zoo Animal Management.

As part of their qualification, the pair have recently returned from a week-long residential in Hampshire where they met with keepers from other zoos to compare experiences.

The two Dudley Zoo keepers are now studying for an exam at the end of their first year, while various assignments will take up their second. They will also have to specialise in a particular subject at the end of their course.

Matt Lewis, zoo curator, said: “Keepers learn a lot on this course, including all about enclosure design, animal diet, parasites and record keeping, and gives students a broad knowledge of animal care in zoos.”

Nine keepers from the Castle Hill attraction have already gained the qualification and three are now in their second year of studies.

Matt added: “We have very well qualified staff and a great deal of knowledge here at Dudley Zoo.”
