Halesowen moves closer to getting a flag

HALESOWEN looks set to get a flag - but it may not be the one designed by a former Earls High pupil who has spearheaded the move.

Philip Tibbett's proposal for a flag of his design to fly with pride in the town went before a meeting of Halesowen Area Committee last night.

Councillors said they liked the idea and Philip's flag, but decided there should be a competition to pick the design.

Philip, who works as an engineering project manager in Preston but returns regularly to his home town, said he was very pleased Halesowen will get a flag.

He said: "To be at this point after the last few years of effort is hugely satisfying and I feel very proud to helped contribute this to my hometown.

"A competition for a flag might be a great way of engendering pride in the town.

"Obviously I feel that my design will be a very strong contender owing to the sheer amount of meaning and energy that has been put into it."

Councillor Bob Price said he thought there should be a competition open to schools and colleges across Halesowen. He said the Halesowen working group should set up the contest.

Councillor Jeff Hill thanked Philip for his "enthusiasm" and "dedication" and said "it's great we are the first of the area committees to move towards a flag."

Councillor Karen Shakespeare said she liked Philip's design.

She said: "I like the fact he's kept the colours - it feels quite comfortable."

Philip's flag features elements of Halesowen's two coats of arms. The older arms are associated with Halesowen Abbey which was founded by Premonstratensian canons from France in 1215.

The second coat of arms was granted by the Royal College for the parish council in 1937 and can be seen on benches in the town centre.
