AN OLDBURY school is celebrating after winning joint first prize in the Children's Parliament debating competition, with the prize a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament.
Teams from Langley Primary in Oldbury and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary, Tipton, produced such strong arguments the judges decided to split the prize between them.
The competition gave environmentally-minded youngsters from 14 schools across the borough's six towns a chance to debate sustainable development issues in Sandwell's Council Chamber at Sandwell Council House in Oldbury.
Cabinet member for regeneration and transport councillor Bob Badham said: "The Children's Parliament has provided the opportunity for young people to air their views and 'have a say' on community and global issues.
"The event makes young people think about their current and future roles as citizens, practice debating skills for literacy work and build their awareness of sustainable development issues and introduces them to local democracy."
All those taking part received a certificate and book prize from Sandwell's Mayor, Councillor Geoff Lewis.
The winners will make their Westminster visit, which has been arranged with the support of West Bromwich East MP Tom Watson, on September 22.
