THE ROWLEY village Sons of Rest building is set to get a facelift this week.

Youngsters from Reflex Sandwell will be cleaning the historic Birmingham Road building and its grounds on Thursday.

And Blackheath Councillor Shirley Ching will also be donning her overalls to help the tidy up.

She said: “The Sons of Rest building has the potential to be a real part of the community like it used to be in the past.

“We are hoping that we will be able to turn it in to a youth club because we really do not have any facilities for youngsters in Rowley village.”

She added: “The Reflex Sandwell youth team will be helping ensure the Sons of Rest building and its grounds are looking top notch after this Thursday.”

Reflex Sandwell is a youth project in which youngsters help community projects and gain a NVQ qualification in the process.

Cllr Ching added: “The community is really behind this ongoing project and the local PCSOs are also helping out as well.

“The building just needs to be brought up to standard and then we can get started transforming it, hopefully, when the various funding arrives we can really push on with it.”

And the councillor believes a youth club will be more inclusive for local youngsters than the Britannia Park skate park.

She said: “Not everyone wants to skate, its great for those that do, but there are a lot of youngsters, especially girls, who would rather do something else.

“That is why the new youth club will have a lot more general activities including pool tables and other activities.”
