HALESOWEN will get its own flag flying proudly above the town as a competition is launched for residents to submit their designs.
The council is inviting people to design a flag to reflect the town's history and culture.
The winning entry will be made into a flag that will be given a prominent position in the town centre.
Councillors sitting on Halesowen Area Committee decided to stage the competition after former Halesowen man Philip Tibbetts put his idea and design for a flag to them.
Philip had hoped they would approve his flag and it would fly proudly above the town but instead councillors decided on the contest and said his design would be automatically entered.
Councillor Les Jones, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This is a great competition that will give residents the chance to get involved with the design of their town’s new flag.
“We want the flag to be striking and iconic and I’m sure the winning flag is something that will encapsulate Halesowen past, present and future.”
Councillor Bob James, chairman of Halesowen Area Committee, said he wanted to see as many school and college pupils as possible enter.
Anyone over the age of 16 can enter the competition which runs until Saturday November 14.
Entries should be submitted on A3 paper along with a 100-word explanation and the entrant’s full name, address and phone number to Kerry Law, Dudley Council, Mary Stevens Park, Heath Lane, Stourbridge, DY8 2AA.
Entries will not be sent back. The winner will be notified after the decision has been made by the area committee on January 14.
