Halesowen hosts anti-racism football tournament

HALESOWEN is set to host a five-a-side tournament as part of 'Kick Racism Out Of Football' week.

The event hopes to help black, white and asian youngsters from Cradley, Lye and Halesowen get together through football.

Young people between eight and 16-years-old are invited to the Halesowen Powerleague on Wednesday October,28 from 1pm to 3.30pm.

The event has been organised by the Cradley police community support officers (PCSOs) with assistance from Dudley Youth Positive Activity and Citizenship Scheme, Black Country Connexions, Dudley Racial Equality Council, Cradley Centre Youth Group and St Peter’s Church.

Over 40 young people from across the borough will take part in the event, which is funded by the West Midlands Police Building Block Trust.

PCSO Lynn Gardner said: “Cradley, and the residential areas that surround it, has a diverse community and this event provides the chance for everyone from various cultural backgrounds to work towards a common goal of trust and respect.

“The football event also encourages local youths to stay fit by encouraging them to take part in long-term recreational activities, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and to engage in positive social behaviour in their community.

She added: "Finally, this type of activity will provide a chance to build and strengthen positive relationships between local youths and their neighbourhood police officers.”

Dudley councillors from Lye will also be taking part in a separate five-a-side football match against a team of West Midlands Police officers and there will be various exhibitions, competitions and activities to promote the ‘Kick Racism Out Of Football’ and ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ campaigns at the event.
