Birthday celebrations at day centre

The MAYOR of Dudley attended a special birthday party at a Halesowen day centre to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

Brett Young Day Centre, Old Hawne Lane, opened in 1984 and is one of eight Dudley Council-run day centres for older people and people with a physical disability.

Its 80 users take part in activities like arts and crafts, music and gentle exercise as well as going out and about on church visits, pub lunches and day trips.

The celebrations saw regular visitors enjoy performances by the Brett Young choir and Lee Ralph who wrote and performed a special song to mark the centre’s birthday. There was also a stand-up comedy set and staff and users read out special memories of the centre.

Special thanks were given to Gladys Goodall who has volunteered since the centre opened and to staff including Irene Smitheman who has given 17 years' service.

Cllr Martin, said: "The centre provides activities and a sociable environment which are clearly valued by its services users. Many had heartfelt memories to share which made it a truly wonderful occasion.”

The centre is named after Frances Brett Young, a Halesowen born poet and writer.
