Halesowen’S Cornbow Centre has won a national award for its extension and renovation.

The accolade comes after new figures revealed the shopping centre is attracting double the amount of shoppers than last year.

The British Council of Shopping Centres awarded the Cornbow’s owner’s Vale Retail a gold award after the revamped centre breathed new life into the town centre.

Adrian Oliver, director at Vale Retail, said: “Anyone with a stake in the future of Halesowen knew the pain we’d have to endure during the extension works but most now agree that it’s been more than worthwhile.

“The BCSC award is the cherry on the cake but by far the biggest prize is how Halesowen people have voted with their feet.

“Seeing footfall double is a thrill, especially in such a tough economic climate. It’s totally outstripped all of our expectations for the whole town.”

Over £50m was invested in to the Cornbow Centre and Vale Retail worked closely with Dudley Council to ensure the improvements helped the long term future of Halesowen.

Councillor Les Jones, deputy leader at Dudley Council and cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This multi-million pound investment was possible because of the strong commitment each of the partners gave to delivering such a state-of-the-art regeneration project which improved town centre facilities for residents.

“This award recognises what can be achieved through successful partnership working.”

Commenting on this year’s awards, BCSC chief executive, Michael Green said: “The Cornbow Centre is an exceptional example of the innovative design and quality needed to deliver exciting, inspirational developments.
