A GROUND-BREAKING partnership between Sandwell Council, special schools and mainstream schools has given over eighty children a Summer to remember.

Schools are working with the council's Central Extended Services Team and The Albion Foundation to provide a range of inclusive activities for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities during the holidays.

Sandwell Council's cabinet member for children and families Cllr Bob Badham said: "This is the first time special schools and mainstream schools have worked together to provide inclusive, high quality activities for children with special educational needs and disabilities during the summer break.

"It is a ground breaking initiative that clearly demonstrates the commitment and enthusiasm from the schools, the council and the Albion Foundation and I want to thank everybody involved."

The scheme is funded by Aiming High for Disabled Children Short Breaks and provides new and exciting opportunities for pupils from the Meadows Sports College, Shenstone Lodge, Brades Lodge, the Orchard School, the Westminster School, Wodensborough Community Technology College and Bristnall Hall Technology College.

Activities include swimming, golf, art, dance, cooking, music and bike safety courses to give young people aged 10 to 19 with new skills, increased confidence and the chance to meet pupils from other schools.

The summer programme also encourages the children to work towards qualifications and awards.
