THE mysteries of the ruins of Halesowen Abbey came alive for hundreds of people this weekend during two successful open days.

The Hales Owen Abbey Trust, The Halesowen Historical Society and the owner of the land all worked together to ensure visitors could stroll around the site and understand the importance of the ruins.

Halesowen Abbey was an educational and spiritual powerhouse in the Middle Ages and continued to have considerable power until Thomas Cromwell ordered it’s closure in 1539.

Chairman of the Trust Roy Burgess was delighted with the turn out and declared the open days an unqualified success.

He said: “The open days were wonderful, we had 150 people turn up on Saturday and 130 people come on Sunday which when you consider it was raining was a lot of interested people.

“We were also delighted that John Hutton from the Halesowen Historical Society took the time to explain the mysteries of the Abbey site.”

There are two more open days being held this month, between 11am and 4pm on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26.
