Staff and users at a Halesowen day care centre are worried its long-term future could be in jeopardy.

Councillors Ray Burston and Jennifer Dunn visited the centre in Old Hawne Lane as part of a routine check.

On their visit they heard people working at and attending the centre express concern it could be given the chop.

The centre caters for around 45 elderly and mentally and physically disabled people, giving them the chance to socialise.

Councillor Ray Burston said there were no plans to close the centre, but that users and staff had said they were worried it could come up for the chop in the future and had spoken to the councillors on their visit.

Cllr Burston said: "It's just a concern in general about review into the use of day care centres and the possibility of reducing the numbers.

"There's nothing definite - it's just a case of it could happen.

"Staff and users were wondering when the review takes place if they need fewer ones.

"In the long term all social services are looking into it.

"We were feeding back to management their concerns for the long term.

"I hope it stays, it's still got a clientele that uses it regularly so it would be nice to think it will stay."

Perry Buck, spokesman for Dudley Council, said: "There are no plans to close the day centre.

"We are always looking at the best way of providing services and it may be some services are most appropriately provided through different means but that doesn't mean it's under threat."
