MATHS teachers and students at Oldbury’s Perryfields High School are celebrating after record GCSE results put the school in the top three cent nationwide.
Eighty per cent of maths students gained A*-C GCSE grades in 2010, with 59 of them achieving A* or A grades, making it one of the best in the country.
Nine years ago, the then struggling school was placed in special measures by Ofsted, now it tops Sandwell’s GCSE league table.
Headteacher Dai Meredith said: “I am extremely pleased to be top in Sandwell. It is another set of fantastic results which build on the previous year’s success.
“Sixty-four per cent gained the higher grades including maths and English, which was exceptional.”
He added that he was “extremely pleased” that the maths results were in the top three per cent in the country.
In English, just under 70 per cent of students gained GCSE A*-C grades and Mr Meredith said 60 per cent of early entries this year had already gained C grades or higher.
“Again, traditional subjects at Perryfields have been delivered well - 73 per cent of students gained the higher grades in science as well. We concentrate in core areas and build on that to develop a successful school,” he added.
