A Hayley Green councillor is on target to raise £9,000 from a charity caper for Russells Hall Hospital in memory of his niece, who died of leukaemia aged 21.

Ken Turner's 16-hour Break Out trek saw him travel from the hospital to Dudley Council House, Westminster, Brussells, Edinburgh and Cardiff, relying on the kindness of strangers.

Cllr Turner expects to hand over a staggering £9,000 to the leukaemia unit from the stunt - in memory of Kate Parry, of Archer Court, Pedmore.

He said: "Staff know all the patients they have - and they have hundreds.

"They do all they can to make sure patients are resting and relaxed enough to get the benefit of the treatment.

"I have felt that Katie was there and behind this whole exercise from day one."

Cllr Turner said he planned to stage more fundraisers on his return to up the total to £10,000 and then would eventually like to see a new building exclusively for use by cancer patients at Russells Hall.
