WORK is due to start next month on the installation of a long-awaited crossing on the A456 dual carriageway in Halesowen - dubbed one of the most dangerous roads in the country.

Approval was given last June for the lighted crossing on the road at Hayley Green to be installed this financial year and work is due to start in early February.

The busy stretch of the Hagley Road has claimed three lives in the last 20 years, the most recent tragedy being the death of 18-year-old Halesowen College student Lucy Mills in 2004.

The 30-year campaign by residents was stepped up again in 2010 after a 91-year-old man suffered a broken arm when he was hit by a car, sparking renewed fears of more deaths.
