Halesowen Cricket Club is mourning former player Louis Vorster who was tragically murdered in his native South Africa last night.

Vorster played for the club in 1986 and was a firm favourite with players and fans alike.

Halesowen Cricket Club chairman Steve Baker remembered Vorster fondly.

He said: "Those of us that knew Louis during his time with us in 1986 will have their own memories.

"Mine is of the time he played for Old Halesonians Rugby Club 4th team which included Barry Adams, Simon Edge and myself one Saturday afternoon early season when a pre season friendly had been rained off.

"He had obvious skill but lacked the required commitment (understandably so) which drew Mr Adams’ eye. We won the game and I’m sure Louis scored a try, but the memory is hazy these days."

He added: "On the cricket pitch his talent was there for all to see with the Bat and also as a more than useful fielder. However, I feel that he benefited most during his stay in England from the education in life that he gained from living with Simon Edge and Toby Hall. I’m sure they have their own stories to tell."

He added: "He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him and our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time."
