DESCENDANTS of Halesowen’s biggest benefactor, the Somers family, are gathering for a major reunion later this month.

Up to 100 members of the family will travel from around the country and abroad for the get-together at Somers Sports and Social Club, Grange Hill, on Saturday May 19.

It will be the second reunion at the grade II listed building, the first being on the same date in 1979 when more than 90 family members attended.

The Somers family has had a long association with Halesowen starting with Walter Somers who employed hundreds of people until his company, Walter Somers Ltd, of Mucklow Hill, was taken over in the early 1990s. The company is still there today, under different ownership.

Somers Sports and Social chairman Paul Hill said: “Walter Somers, his son Seth and family members did a great amount of good for Halesowen and this is remembered by the naming of the main central square in the town centre, Somers Square.

“Seth left many legacies including the Somers Sports and Social Club, the Cycling and Athletic Club, the British Legion Club and the Seth Somers Park on which stands the Halesowen Cricket Club.
