THE bells will be ringing in Halesowen for the Queen’s Jubilee on Sunday to coincide with the Thames River Pageant.

Halesowen’s renowned St John the Baptist Church bellringers are preparing to take part in the celebrations which will see church bells ringing out up and down the country.

The first bell will be rung at 3pm on Sunday on the Queen’s barge on the Thames and this will give the signal to churches across the land to join in.

The Halesowen church has marked every national event since 1776 including Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

It will be a special day for Mike Lashford who has been ringing the historic bells in Halesowen for 55 years.

“My great great great uncle Harry Lea was one of the bellringers on the day of Victoria’s Jubilee so I am delighted that I will be carrying on the tradition on Sunday.”

The St John the Baptist Church bellringing band are the reigning Worcester and District champions and will soon be featured on the BBC 2’s The Great British Story - A People’s History.
